Nessie's Legend

They claim that the very first sighting was in 565 AD by St. Columba. He said that he saw a "water beast" in the River Ness. They say that St. Columba saw a group of Picts burying a man who had suffered injuries by "a monster of the water". He supposedly laid his staff on the corpse and the man had come back to life. The Picts then attempted to swim across the Loch Ness. Legend says that the monster sensed movement and tried to eat the Picts. St. Columba then raised the sign of the cross on his staff and commanded "Thou shalt go no further - return with all speed", and the monster retreated. Thus, the legend of the Loch Ness Monster was born....

More sightings of the Loch Ness Monster were in Scotland in 1933 by George Spicer and his wife, they say that the Loch Ness, known affectionatly as Nessie, passed in front of their car, went into the bushes and splashed into the Loch Ness Lake.

There was also another sighting in 1933 by a maidservant named Margaret Murno, she claimed that she watched the Monster for 20 minutes until it went into the water and dissapeard.

There have been many sightings of Nessie since then, many pictures and videos have been taken since the sighings in 1933. People of all ages and all over the world have heard about Nessie. Children are interested, men and women of all ages. The legend of Nessie will never die.

The people of Scotland have talked about Nessie for centuries and will be talked about for more centuries to come. They are very passionate about Nessie, it's a story that has been passed on from generations. People from all over go to Scotland to see the famous Loch Ness Lake and look for Nessie.

The First Nessie Expedition

Edward Mountain financed a watch on July 13, 1934. The expedition lasted for five weeks. 20 men with cameras and binoculars were stations around the Loch Ness from 9 a.m till 6 p.m. 21 photographs were taken, although there were none that were considered conclusive. Employed as a supervisor, Captain James Fraser remained by the Loch. On September 15, 1934 he took cine film, which unfortunatly was lost. Afterwards scientists and professors of natural history reveiwed the photographs that were taken they concluded that it was a seal.

My veiw on Nessie

In my opinion I think that Nessie is real. I love the legend of Nessie, although you can't find very many of the original photographs of Nessie there have been many Nessie sightings, and many being of the same description. Don't I wish that there would be original Nessie photos to look at.

Many people may think that legends are just legends and that none of them are true, that they are just stories passed from genertaions so you can tell your children interesting stories for bedtime. I think differently, I believe that all legends have some truth within them. Do you think that all legends of monsters and mythical creatures came from insane people or liers?

But personally I like calling the Loch Ness Monster Nessie. I have many different takes on things. I think that you can't prove that Nessie is a monster, just like dinosaurs, how do you know that they were monsters, and mean? For me monsters are things that cause destruction, and is Scotland still standing, are there not hotels and cities, or villages over where she was sighted? But we may never really know will we. What Nessie is like, is she real, is she a monster, or is she just an animal with the animal instinct of survival but really a sweet loving animal inside...

One day I plan on going, seeking out Nessie, spending all my days on the shore of the Loch Ness Lake to try and see a glimpse of her. Maybe I could be the one to solve the mystery of the Loch Ness, it would be pretty exciting I admit. Even if I don't see Nessie it would be well worth the experience, and well worth something to write about.

Hello KMC: The danger would be that Nessie is really a boy (Nestor?) and would drag you down to some great, green cave 'neath the waves. There, he would have his monster ways with you for all eternity.

Thanks for kind remarks about my 'monster article. Bob
